Hans and I went to Austin last week, Hans for work, me for the food!
Oh, and there was a BYU football game, it was the instigator behind the whole trip.
When we first got there, Hans took me out to a small town called Lockhart (the birthplace of BBQ).
Kreuz BBQ has had it's fire burning since 1900.
The meat was amazing, no sauce, just smoked to perfection!
But I wasn't sure why they slapped the white sandwich bread on top of my meat, that was placed on paper, and told me to pick up some pickles and onions.
What?
Not a fork or knife in the place, and you only got a spoon if you ordered sides.
Basically, tradition stands and you eat with your hands or wrap your meat in the white sandwich bread, slap on some pickles and onions and make yourself a delish sandwich....and it was....awesome!
That night before dinner, we hit the "Bat Bridge!"
Each March, bats come in from Mexico and make a home under the Congress Bridge and stay until October. At first the Austinites were trying to get rid of the bats until they noticed the decrease number of bugs. They come out at dusk and it has now turned into a tourist attraction....
1.5 million bats
eating
10-20,000 pounds of bugs...
EACH NIGHT!
Not a single mosquito or fly in the city the whole time we were there!

Waiting for the bats to make their appearance!
It was so dark by the time they came out it was hard to catch them on camera, but you get the picture.
They were coming out like this for at least 10-15 minutes!
And yes, it smelled like a hamster cage.
Next on the food agenda was Guero's Taco Bar.
Shrimp Enchiladas with Roja sauce. Hans' favorite food ever.
In the morning we hit Magnolia Cafe (recommended on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives) and we had a peaches and cream pancake, a gingerbread pancake and an omelet with lemon sour cream, a tomatilla sauce and a tomato sauce and was filled with avocados and cheese....so good, we went back the next morning.
Then during the rest of the trip we hit a few food trucks...a crepe truck, a taco truck, a cupcake truck and finished our trip at Stubbs for some more BBQ.
Super fun trip, and as always, so grateful to an awesome babysitter....
Madeleine ROCKS!!!
PS. BYU lost.
