"STAYCATION" Day 1

We decided this year to go local on our summer vacation...mocking ourselves calling it a "staycation!" So we started out with a bang, heading to Ogden to go to Flowrider and I-Fly!
First they needed a little instruction.... Then they got right into the action!!!

The pictures really say it all! Everyone had such a blast! Josie had a lot of patience, but really wished she could have been out there.  A couple more inches and she'll be there!

And here are a few of the MANY FLOPS!!!!!

After the fun, we went across the street for some great Mexican, the kids were starving!
After lunch we went back to the same building complex and went upstairs for I FLY! We all watched a video, got briefed on the protocol and were given some hand signals! We were all suited up in flight suits, helmets, ear plugs and goggles. Oh how I wish I had some pics of this.... Josie was too cute. They had me lock up my camera, so I didn't catch any pics, but here is a little taste of what happened!

Seriously so much fun! Everyone loved it! LOVED IT!

Next we went down to the Air Force museum in Layton. We came upon this beauty and I had a lot to tell the kids.... you see the man who flew this plane was a missionary in the England London South Mission when I was 13. He is a legend!
"Between the years of 1948 and 1949 Berlin Airlift pilot Lt. Gail Halvorsen was so struck with the friendliness and excitement of the Berlin children that he wanted to do something special for them and to spread a little cheer to their beleaguered times in Berlin during the blockade. Lt. Halvorsen decided to start his own operation and named it "Operation Little Vittles." He practically bought out all the candy available where he was based and out of strips of cloth created miniature parachutes and attached the candy to them. At the beginning, Lt. Halvorsens buddies gave up their rations of candy and gum and also their handkerchiefs to help the cause. The American Confectioners Association asked Lt. Halvorsen how much candy and gum he could use. They sent tons of candy and gum to Westover AFB for processing. 22 schools in Chicopee Massachusetts converted an old fire station into a Little Vittles headquarters. They made parachutes, tied on candy or gum and sent the finished product to Lt. Halvorsen at Rhine Main AFB. When the supplies came on line at Rhine Main all of Lt. Halversons squadron and others helped drop the candy and gum."
This is what he looked like when I met him, such an amazing man! Kindness personified!
This is the Blackbird...it is hard to see, but it is MASSIVE! This is a special plane to us too.... Our neighbor Gil Bertelson was one of the few pilots that flew the Blackbird.... AMAZING...it's insane records are below!

Here is a better picture of the whole thing!
And here is a picture of Brother Bertelson...my favorite memory of him was when he came to speak to the youth of our ward, he had on a suit coat and a white shirt and tie. As his ice breaker he told the kids, that he's "all business in the front," and then he took of his jacket and his shirt was royal blue and purple paisley on the sleeves and the back, and he said....."and a party in the back!" What a stud! He still fits into his uniform from when he was 25.... not many people can do that!

After the museum, we drove out to Antelope Island on the Causeway. Ooooweee, does that place have a special aroma! Oh, and the flies..... it was like a plague! But just to start this summer of Utah "Firsts" for me.... I had to swim in the Great Salt Lake....or maybe just float, yes float it is, only about 10 seconds to get in, get the pic and get out! STINKY! And if you're wondering, we really did float! Totally worth it for the experience...

Yikes...look at the color of that water.... but I'm totally floating!

Josie, was not loving it... little cuts were stinging and we headed straight back to the showers, she could have cared less if you could float.
Rock made the mistake of rubbing his eyes.... salt at these levels is not nice!
The boys didn't seem to mind the stink.... they played for a while and skipped rocks, while we enjoyed drinks in the car!

After stopping in Salt Lake for a little Chinese food, we were exhausted from a full day of fun!

PS. Thanks to Dayna Magleby for the heads up on the bigger photos.....love them girl!

This my dear is the BEST idea I have EVAH seen!! Why do we have to drive 12 hours to feel like we are on vacation when there are so many fun things right in our back door? I'm gonna have to have a staycation...I don't know when, but sometime. This week is craziness trying to get all the kids and their schedules ready for school! I am sure you are doing the same thing.
